PAUL DAVIS joined The Providence Journal reporting staff in 1988, after working for three Florida newspapers. A Brown University graduate, he has covered the business, real estate, schools, local governments and people of South County. He won three Metcalf Awards for reporting on matters of diversity: a 2005 series on the Narragansett Indian tribe, which he wrote with reporter Katie Mulvaney, a series tracing the journey of a young slave from Africa to a plantation in South Carolina, and a series on slavery and the slave trade in Rhode Island. The online version of the slavery series, The Unrighteous Traffick: Rhode Island Slave History, won an EPpy Award in 2007.

JOHN FREIDAH has been a staff photographer at The Providence Journal since 1995, and was a fiber-optic engineer before changing careers. Freidah partnered with projo.com in 1997 to produce one of our first multimedia efforts, A Time to Die. His work with reporter Peter Lord on Poisoned: An in-depth look at Rhode Island's lead-poisoning crisis won a Newspaper Association of America Digital Edge Award for Public Service in 2002. Freidah's photography won first place in Pictures of the Year International. His work on the 2005 series, Saving Block Island, has won numerous awards. Freidah has traveled twice to the war zone in Iraq to cover Rhode Island troops. He is a graduate of Stevens Institute of Technology, in Hoboken, N.J., with a degree in engineering and physics.
