VanDeGiesen, 29, a North Attleboro High School football hero who followed his dream of joining the Marines to become a pilot, was killed just before sunrise when the helicopter he was piloting and another U.S. Marine helicopter collided over the southern Afghanistan province of Helmand.

Toner, 26, of Narragansett, who worked as a garrison engineer at Camp Shaheen in Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan, was shot and killed along with a Navy nurse by an insurgent.

Harrington, 24, who grew up in Swansea, Mass., and was serving in the 542nd Maintenance Company, 80th Ordnance Battalion, 593rd Sustainment Brigade, out of Fort Lewis, Wash., died in Basra, Iraq, when someone in his unit backed over him with a forklift. That accident is under investigation.

Weidemann, 23, of Newport and the 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division, Rhode Island National Guard, was killed while driving a military vehicle on patrol in the Anbar Province west of Baghdad when his armored vehicle hit an improvised explosive device.

Valdepeñas, 21, of Seekonk and the 1st Battalion, 25th Marines, weapons company, reserve unit, of Ayer., Mass., was killed while on patrol in Fallujah when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device in Iraq's Al Anbar province. He graduated from Bishop Hendricken High School in 2003.

Jazmin, 25, of Providence and the Army's 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas, died Aug. 27 in Taji, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his M2A3 Bradley Vehicle during combat operations.

Kelly, 48, of Richmond, Maine, and the 3-172 Mountain Infantry Unit of the Maine Army National Guard, died Saturday, May 13, in Iraq from a roadside bomb that hit the truck in which he was riding. He grew up in Cranston.

Flanagan, 22, of Inverness, Fla., and the Army's 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Ky., died Jan. 20, in Al Huwijah, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee during patrol operations. He lived in Exeter as a child.

His mother lives in Westerly.

An Army Reserve civil affairs soldier, Freeman, 31, died in Baghdad, Iraq, from wounds sustained earlier that day when he came under small arms fire while conducting a vehicle search. He was a civil affairs specialist assigned to the 443rd Civil Affairs Battalion, an Army Reserve special operations unit based in Warwick.

Potts, 38, of Tiverton and the A Battery, 1st Battalion, 103rd Field Artillery of the Rhode Island National Guard, was killed at a traffic checkpoint in Taji, a dozen miles north of Baghdad, when the soldiers came under fire from insurgents.

Cash, 36, of Tracy, Calif., and the Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 120th Infantry, Jacksonville, N.C., died June 24 in Baqubah, Iraq, when his Bradley Fighting Vehicle came under attack by enemy forces using small-arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades. He was a native of Pawtucket.

The pastor of Curtis Corner Baptist Church for 19 years, Kelley, 48, of South Kingstown, had been traveling with the Global Resource Group trying to establish a Baptist church in Baghdad when the taxi they were riding in was attacked by gunmen.

Mancini, 43, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and the Army's 486th Civil Affairs Battalion, U.S. Army Reserve, based in Broken Arrow, Okla., was killed with six other soldiers when a weapons cache exploded west of Ghazni, Afghanistan. He graduated from Lincoln High School.
