NORTH KINGSTOWN -- This was just a light training paddle a few days before a big race, but Wesley Echols had brought his fastest boat: a 21-foot carbon fiber surf ski shaped like a stiletto, a racing boat fast enough to shred the common image of kayaking as genteel recreation.

Where 'there's no traffic, no lights'
PROVIDENCE -- Primitive man is said to have enjoyed using boats during the Stone Age. Ray Robbio dates his personal appreciation for them to July 4, 2001. That night he and his wife, Cheryl, rode a ferry to Newport to watch the fireworks. Under a rain of crackling lights, they marveled at all those silhouetted boats anchored in the harbor. Soon after that summer holiday, the Robbios found themselves on the showroom floor at South Attleboro Marine.
