About Sunshine Week

Starting March 13, journalism organizations are launching a weeklong, nationwide campaign called Sunshine Week to press for government access, contending that information is being withheld more often by officials who argue that post-Sept.11 security concerns warrant keeping it secret.

About these essays

Journalism students at the University of Rhode Island wrote the following essays as part of the course, “Foundations of American Journalism”. They’ve spent the semester reading about the political philosophers who influenced the concept of press freedom. With Sunshine Week approaching, Professor Barbara Meagher asked the students to reflect on what many journalists see as excessive government secrecy.
