Editor's note: Staff writer Michael Corkery covered the war in Iraq for The Providence Journal. He was on assignment with the 2nd Battalion, 7th Regiment, of the Army's 3rd Infantry Division. He was at the 2-7 command's Tactical Operations Center on the day Paul Smith was killed.
