Slideshow: View more photos of Carol and the destruction she left behind

When Hurricane Carol struck Rhode Island on Aug. 31, 1954, she made herself felt from the Ocean State's southern coast, north into Narragansett Bay into downtown Providence, and eastward to the Sakonnet River. At left, waves lash at the Edgewood Yacht Club along the Providence River basin along Cranston's eastern edge.
