How this story was reported 03/07/2004 To report this story, staff writer Mark Arsenault wrote to Craig Price at the Adult Correctional Institutions' High Security Center in February 2002, to ask for his cooperation. Price responded by mail, agreeing to correspond by letter and in interviews. The Department of Corrections will not allow Price to have media visitors. But Price is allowed to meet in no-contact visits once a week with people he invites to be on his personal visitors list, which is maintained in a computer at the High Security Center. To get on the list, Arsenault provided Price with required personal information, such as his home address and date of birth. Arsenault has met with Price, on average, two times a month since mid-2002. The Department of Corrections would not allow Arsenault to bring a tape recorder or a note pad to the 90-minute visits, but Arsenault and Price exchanged numerous letters based on their conversations. Excerpts from the letters, in Price's handwriting, are reproduced in this series. Price has trained himself to be ambidextrous, which may account for the differences in his handwriting. Staff artist Frank Gerardi visited Price once for 70 minutes to help him prepare illustrations for this series. Gerardi was not allowed to sketch Price during their visit. |
