Derderian allowed to travel out of state

WARWICK — Michael Derderian, a co-owner of The Station nightclub who pleaded no contest to involuntary manslaughter in the deaths of 100 people killed in the fire there in 2003, will be allowed to travel out of state for a week in January, a Superior Court judge decided Tuesday.
Judge Bennett R. Gallo granted Derderian’s request to travel out of state for a family trip between Jan. 11 and 18. Neither Derderian, nor his attorney, Kathleen M. Hagerty, said where the family trip would be.
Released from prison in June, Derderian is serving three years of probation. Any person on probation must abide by certain restrictions, such as staying away from felons, and must seek permission to leave the state. According to Assistant Attorney General William Ferland, the probation department had no objection to Derderian’s request.
Derderian was released after serving about two years and three months of a four-year sentence. He began serving time on Sept. 29, 2006, after he and his brother, Jeffrey, also a co-owner of the West Warwick club, pleaded no contest to the charges.
Jeffrey Derderian did not have to serve prison time under his plea agreement; he was sentenced to community service.
