Groundbreaking for memorial, Apponaug festival set tomorrow

01:00 AM EDT on Friday, September 10, 2004

WARWICK -- Ground will be broken tomorrow for a monument honoring all Rhode Islanders who have served -- and will serve -- in the war on terrorism.

The Rhode Island Association of Student Councils and the Warwick Veterans Memorial High School Student Council will host the ceremony at noon at Veterans Park, across from the high school, 2401 West Shore Rd.

Among those expected to attend are Governor Carcieri, U.S. Rep. James R. Langevin and Mayor Scott Avedisian.

The 25th Annual Silver Jubilee Apponaug Village Festival, also tomorrow, will also commemorate the third anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, with music at 9 a.m. provided by the Apponaug Pentecostal Church.

Avedisian has asked the city's houses of worship to ring their bells at 9 a.m. tomorrow "to pay tribute to the victims and their families and friends."

"This simple act," the mayor wrote, "will also recognize the rescue personnel, health-care providers and many volunteers who worked so hard to save lives and tend to the physical and emotional needs of people in the aftermath of the tragedy."
