Development: The Executive Development Center is offering a Women's Institute for Leadership Certificate program, to be held one Saturday per month over four months. Washington: University President John Bowenattended the "U.S. University Presidents Summit on International Education," recently in Washington, D.C.

Reappointed: Felix Carlone, a resident of Warwick and chairman of the building construction and cabinetmaking technology program, was recently reappointed to the Rhode Island Contractors Registration Board by Governor Carcieri.

Award: Eric Kirton of Warwick, an associate professor in the Architectural Building Engineering Technology Department, and Steve Lavoie, an assistant professor in the Mechanical Engineering Technology Department, were recently awarded the Oppenhiemer Best Paper Award. The award was the result of a paper they presented at the Amercian Society for Engineering Education/Engineering Design Graphics Division Mid Year conference.

PROVIDENCE COLLEGE

Music: The Department of Music will present the Rhode Island Philharmonic Master Class No. 2, featuring Corey Cerovsek on violin, as part of its "Firday at Four" series on Friday at the Ryan Concert Hall of the Smith Center for the Arts. This event is free. For more information, call 865-2183.

RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE

Institute: The College January Intersession institute "I-Plans and Interventions: Strategies for Meeting Students' Social-Emotional Needs" will be held Friday in the Donovan Dining Center. Teachers are eligible for six contact hours toward professional development. Participants must register by Wednesday (no onsite registration). Workshop: Joseph A. Awards: The college's alumni office is seeking nominations for the 2006 alumni awards and honor roll. Candidates are chosen on the basis of professional achievement, community service, and service to the college or alumni association.

Choices: The university is hosting "Healthy Choices," a week-long series of presentations that focuses on nutrition, body image and eating disorders. On Monday, Jan. 23 at 8 p.m. in Room 205 of the Rodgers Recreation Center, Doctors Bridget Murphy and John Sullivan will present "Body Image," which examines the societal and psychological pressures students face regarding "the perfect physique." On Tuesday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. in the Bazarsky Lecture Hall, Dr. Gerry Willis and Tom Blaney, director of the university's fitness center, will present "Proper Exercise and Nutrition." On Wednesday, Jan. 25, at 2 p.m. and at 7 p.m. at Bazarsky Lecture Hall, actress Megan Hart will perform "The Thin Line," a dramatic presentation on eating disorders; and on Thursday, Jan. 26 at 7 p.m., Liz Minifie, director counseling services, will present "The Thin Line -- Confidentially Speaking," a student-only discussion examining eating disorders.

Auditions: The university theater will hold auditions for its spring production of Angels in America Part I: Millennium Approaches on Monday, Jan. 23, 4 to 10 p.m., and Tuesday, Jan. 24, 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. in G Studio, Fine Arts Center, URI Kingston Campus. Callbacks will be on Wednesday, Jan. 25, 6 to 11 p.m. People auditioning must prepare and memorize a one- to two-minute contemporary monologue that conveys feelings, ideas and/or tells a story and uses heightened language. It is requested that you read the play prior to auditions. The play will run April 20 through 22 and 26 through 29 at 7:30 p.m. and April 23 at 3 p.m. Auditions are open to the public.
