More than 400 take part in LEGO event at Roger Williams University

More than 400 elementary and middle school children tackled robotics and climate change with LEGOs Saturday at the FIRST LEGO League Rhode Island Championship event. Forty-five teams in Rhode Island created robots for the tournament to compete in matches that solve missions on a game board that simulates real-life climate issues.
“No School Foster-Glocester,” a team of children from Foster, won the Champion’s Award for receiving the highest cumulative score at the competition, which earns the opportunity to compete against 80 teams from 24 countries at the upcoming FIRST LEGO League World Festival.
SMART (St. Mary’s Academy Robotics Team), from St. Mary’s Academy Bay View, received the second place Champion’s Award.
The Judges Award went to “Hyper Green Oreos,” a team of children from Lincoln. The Against All Odds Award was won by the “Electrifier” team from St. Rose of Lima, in Warwick.
“Cold War,” from Riverside Middle School in East Providence, won the FIRST LEGO League Team award for their teamwork and sportsmanship. “Greenergy” team from Cumberland and Lincoln won the first-place award for Robot Performance.
The “LEGOmaniacs” of the North Smithfield Robotics Club won the award for overall robot design and programming. And, the “Spartina Warriors,” of Compass School in Kingston won the award for overall research project.
