Although many regions of the country are getting more positive economic news, Rhode Island is still “muddling its way” through the recession. The 13-percent unemployment rate reported for September 2009 is the highest reported rate since 1976 when unemployment rates started being recorded using the methodology of the U.S. Bureau of Statistics. The number of unemployed Rhode Island residents increased to 74,000. Rhode Island is losing jobs at a faster rate than at any other time in the past 50 years and new job creation looks grim.
