Sex offender arrested after Barrington incidentJohn Deware sexually assaulted an 11-year-old boy in 1994. He got out of prison in January.
BARRINGTON -- A Providence man with a conviction for child molestation conviction tried to entice a 9-year-old Barrington boy into his car on Saturday. The boy, who was playing alone with a soccer ball, ran home and alerted his parents. The suspect John W. Deware, 46, of 415 Friendship St., Providence, convicted in 1993 with molesting an 11-year-old North Kingstown boy, was arraigned Monday afternoon on charges of enticement of children, first offense, and eluding a police officer, first offense, in District Court, Providence. The police chased Deware into Massachusetts late Saturday where .a Seekonk officer caught Deware in a cornfield. Deware is being held at the Adult Correctional Insitutions in Cranston. Court records show that in 1993 Deware was sentenced to 40 years, with 14 to serve at the Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston, for sexually assaulting an 11-year-old North Kingstown boy in that town’s Quidnessett Cemetery. Deware pleaded no contest that year to grabbing the boy, taking him to an area of trees, fondling him and making him commit a sexual act, according to the Journal’s archives. Records show Deware, who got out of prison in January, has already had one or more probation violations. Saturday evening, Barrington Officer Patrick Clegg was on patrol when a parent flagged him down. Officer Clegg started looking for a car fitting the boy's description and direction of travel. On Primrose Hill Road, Clegg stopped a 1989 maroon Ford Bronco driven by Deware, the police said. When the officer asked what had happened on the soccer field on Middle Highway, Barrington Police Chief John LaCross said Deware became nervous and drove off. Clegg pursued Deware on Route 114 and Barrington police alerted East Providence and Seekonk authorities. Seekonk police picked up the pursuit as DeWare drove from Mink Road onto Route 6. “I looked down the road and could see the Bronco in question,” Seekonk Officer Bruce T. Hoch wrote in a police report. DeWare would not stop for Hoch, whose cruiser’s lights were flashing and siren on. Deware accelerated to about 65 miles per hour, went through a red light at Fall River Avenue and School Street, the Seekonk police said, and then ran another red light at Warren Avenue. A Rehoboth cruiser joined the pursuit. Shortly after passing Route 136, Deware abruptly turned the Bronco onto a side road, turned around and headed west on Route 6, the police said. Deware turned right into the Alex’s Restaurant parking lot on Fall River Avenue, the police said, and headed to the back of the lot as police cruisers followed. Deware then jumped out and ran. Seekonk and Rehoboth officers gave chase and a Seekonk officer caught Deware in the cornfield behind the restaurant. The Seekonk Police said he ordered Deware to the ground at gunpoint. |
