Secretary of State Matt Brown, a Democrat, announced today he will run for the Senate seat held by Republican Lincoln Chafee.

Brown, a Democrat, says he has already raised more than $212,000 for his bid to unseat Republican Lincoln Chafee in 2006.

"I'm running for U.S. Senate because people all across Rhode Island are facing serious problems every day and the politicians in Washington aren't getting the job done for them," Brown said in a press release announcing his candidacy. "My parents taught me that when you see something wrong -- you do what you can to fix it."

Brown added, "We need a senator who has rolled up his sleeves and been in the trenches working to make life better for people right here in our state. All that matters is getting the job done and getting results for people in Rhode Island."

Chafee, who had been mayor of Warwick for seven years, originally was appointed to his Senate seat in 1999 on the death of his father, longtime U.S. Sen. John H. Chafee. He was later elected to the post.

Brown's campaign released the names of 504 Rhode Islanders who support the campaign, saying they come from different backgrounds and different parts of the state.

Brown was elected secretary of state in 2002, in his first run for office.

He was raised in Providence and is a graduate of Columbia University and Yale Law School.

In 1993, Brown started Providence's City Year program, a Clinton administration initiative designed as a domestic version of the Peace Corps. Brown left City Year in 1998 for law school.
