PROVIDENCE -- The director of the Rhode Island chapter of the American
Red Cross will resign after accepting a position as director of human
resources for the Boston Public School System, a Red Cross spokeswoman
said today.
Barbara McGann will leave the agency on Jan. 2, said Kristin Wieber, a
Red Cross spokeswoman.
McGann joined the Red Cross in June 2002, after a 32-year career in the
Navy. That included a stint as provost at the Naval War College in
Newport.
During her tenure with the Red Cross, she led 450 volunteers who
assisted with The Station nightclub fire last February.
Maj. Gen. Reginald Centracchio, director of the state Emergency
Management Agency, said McGann distinguished herself during a difficult
period of state history.
"She's certainly seen the lion's share of unfortunate scenarios in this
state in the last year or so," he said.
