Rhode Island College is back on top of the New England College wrestling world, and two Anchormen, one from Cranston, are heading to the NCAA Division III championships.

RIC won the New England Wrestling Association championship Sunday for the sixth time and the first since 1992. The Anchormen finished with 121 points. Johnson & Wales was second with 116, Williams third with 105.5.

Sophomore Mike Martini (Cranston West) won the 157-pound championship and earned a trip to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for the national tournament March 7-8. Ranked No. 1 in New England most of the season, he was 4-0 at the NEWA meet and improved to 34-7 this season.

Senior Mike Bonora, the top-ranked 141-pounder in the nation, won his second New England title, winning all five of his matches and improving to 40-2 this season. His only losses were to Division I wrestlers. He will join Martini at the nationals.

Brendan Casey at 174, Kevin Davis at 197 and Brian Hoyt at 125 finished third. Travis Drappi at 133 and Nick Logan at 184 were fourth. Kevin Sutherland was fifth at 149.

Jay Jones is the New England coach of the year and Dave Paquette assistant coach of the year.

Johnson & Wales senior Diego Crespo wrestled through the loser’s bracket, won seven of his eight matches and emerged the champion at 197 pounds. Junior Jerome Owens won at 174 pounds. Both will wrestle at the nationals. Junior Bryan Lenhardt, who finished third at 184, will join them as an at-large selection.

The Wildcats finished 17-6-1 in dual meets this season.

Roger Williams junior Jared Czarneski is going as an at-large selection. He finished second to J&W’s Owens at 174 pounds. The Hawks finished sixth as a team.
