SYRACUSE, N.Y. –– Too many mistakes and turnovers proved costly as the second-ranked Bryant University men’s lacrosse team dropped an 11-2 setback to Le Moyne College in the NCAA Division II semifinals yesterday.

Le Moyne (15-1), the two-time defending national champion, broke open a 2-2 game with nine unanswered goals to earn a trip to the NCAA championship game next Sunday at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro.

Bryant ends its season with a 14-4 record and the highest ranking in school history. In two years, Bryant has won two Northeast-10 Conference titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament under coach Mike Pressler for the first time. The Bulldogs will begin Division I play next year.

In yesterday’s semifinal, Bryant withstood a quick start by the top-ranked Dolphins, as the Bulldogs rallied from a two-goal deficit on goals from Brad Burton and Kevin Hoagland.

Bryant would draw even in the final seconds of the half. Sophomore Ryan Tibbitts picked up a loose ball after Le Moyne failed to clear the ball and found Hoagland in front. The junior sharpshooter beat Le Moyne goalie Doug McIver with the tying goal with nine seconds left.

In the second half, Le Moyne scored three goals in a three-minute span to break the game open. The Dolphins led, 9-2, after three and tacked on two more in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs had 11 second-half turnovers and finished with 19 in the game.

Le Moyne outshot Bryant, 34-23, including 13-1 in the decisive third quarter.

Bryant’s Michael Kennedy finished with 10 saves. McIver had nine for Le Moyne.
