Late free throws put Brown women over Bryant in basketball
01:00 AM EST on Sunday, January 11, 2009
Junior point guard Courtney Lee drained two free throws with five seconds remaining to give the Brown women’s basketball team 64-62 victory over Bryant yesterday at the Pizzitola Sports Center, in Providence. Sophomore guard Karly Grace led the Bears with 20 points and freshman Hannah Passafuime tallied 11 points and a career-high nine rebounds.
A jumper by Kelsey O’Keefe brought the Bulldogs within one with 40 seconds to play. O’Keefe then drew a foul that put her at the line with 10 seconds left. She made the first to tie the game but missed the second as Betsy Jacobson brought down the rebound and pushed the ball up the court to Lee, who was fouled with six seconds left.
Grace carried the Bears in the first half, scoring 14 points en route to a 35-29 lead.
Grace helped Brown build its advantage with two shots from beyond the arc to post its biggest lead of the half, 21-11, at the 11:22 mark. A jumper by Jacobson and a fast-break layup by Lee extended Bruno’s lead to 25-16 with nine minutes remaining in the stanza.
Bryant continued to chip away at its deficit as the Bulldogs came within two, but freshman Aileen Daniels netted a jumper to push the team’s lead back up to four. Brown closed out the first half with a 35-29 lead on 42-percent shooting from the field.
Bryant and Brown went basket-for-basket in the second half, as the Bulldogs came within three, 51-48, with just 10 minutes remaining in the game.
Bryant’s Lindsey Hudspeth then nailed a trey at the 8:30 mark to tie the game.
The next few minutes were a battle, as Bryant was able to secure its first lead of the afternoon, 59-58, after a free throw by Hudspeth with 3:30 remaining on the clock.
But Brown bounced right back after a jumper by Jacobson and sophomore Sadiea Williams to give the Bears a three-point advantage at the 1:28 mark.
