Supreme Court won't review Narragansett smoke-shop ruling

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Supreme Court today declined to review whether Rhode Island authorities can enforce state law on the Narragansett Indian tribal lands, a dispute triggered by state police raid on the tribe's smoke shop.

Charlestown Town Councilman James M. Mageau intended to appoint himself acting town administrator if elected as Town Council president. A story in Tuesday’s South County edition incorrectly stated Mageau would have named himself acting vice president.

Joseph Ungaro, 76, newspaperman, dies
CHARLESTOWN — Joseph M. Ungaro, a leading newspaperman most noted for posing the question to President Richard Nixon about his underpayment of federal income taxes that led to Nixon’s memorable “I’m not a crook” reply, died Sunday night at South County Hospital. He was 76.

Sartor quits after council victors speak of firing him
