Classical Scene by Channing Gray Festival newcomers will light up Newport mansions
It's music by Dvorak down in Newport this weekend, while the Ocean State Lyric Opera stages
Pirates of Penzance
in Providence.
Each July the Newport Music Festival takes an in-depth look at a single composer. This summer, it's the 19th-century Czech Antonin Dvorak.
Dvorak is best known for his ever-popular
New World
Symphony. But he also wrote scads of chamber music and songs. A large chunk of that repertoire will be featured this weekend during "Dvorakiads" scheduled in the city's storied mansions.
Festival newcomer Laura Albers, sister of cellist Julie Albers, tackles Dvorak's violin concerto today at 5:30 p.m., as part of a program at Marble House.
More Dvorak is scheduled for tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Ochre Court and again at 5:30 at Marble House. Those concerts include the E Major String Quartet and some of the composer's choral compositions.
The great F Minor Piano Trio caps off one of two all-Dvorak programs Saturday at 5 p.m. at The Elms. More choral music and the masterful A Major Piano Quintet are on tap Sunday at 5 p.m. at Ochre Court.
Russian rarities make up tonight's concert at The Breakers, followed by a night at the opera tomorrow with arias and arrangements by Verdi, Mozart, Rossini, Donizetti and Bizet. On Saturday, Richard Strauss's autumnal
Four Last Songs
will echo through The Breakers, while on Sunday Polish-Hungarian pianist Piotr Anderszewski makes his festival debut in a classy program that begins and ends with Bach, with Chopin and Janacek sandwiched in between.
All four concerts start at 9 p.m.
In most cases, tickets for daytime concerts are $33, and $38 for evening events. Call 849-0700 for more information.
Back to Gilbert & Sullivan
Ocean State Lyric opens a 10-performance run of
Pirates
tonight at Rhode Island College's new Sapinsley Hall. Before Ocean State Lyric decided to stage grand opera, back when it was called Ocean State Light Opera, Gilbert & Sullivan was the group's bread and butter. Now it is revisiting the operettas of the comic duo after a hiatus of several summers.
This new production, which will head for Newport next weekend, goes in for minimalist sets but a heavy-duty cast. Boston mezzo Pam Delall, who's recorded for a couple of major labels and is highly regarded in early music circles, takes on the role of Ruth, the pirates "maid of all work."
Douglas Jabara, who's up for a Rigoletto in New York, stars as the Pirate King.
Performances take place tonight and tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. in RIC's Sapinsley Hall, Saturday at 2 and 8 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m.
In Newport, performances take place at St. Michael's Country Day School, 180 Rhode Island Ave., July 19 and 20 at 7:30, July 21 at 2 and 8 p.m., and July 22 at 2 p.m.
Tickets are $25, with discounts for students and seniors. Call 456-8144 or 783-6821.
