Kingston Music Fest's winter concert features Diaz Trio
The Kingston Chamber Music Festival holds its annual winter concert tomorrow night. The only thing is, for the first time, festival founder David Kim won't be taking part in the festivities.
That's because Kim, who was for years a freelance violinist, is now concertmaster of the famed Philadelphia Orchestra, a full-time gig and then some. But Kim is sending along one of his colleagues, the orchestra's principal violist, Roberto Diaz. Diaz, who not long ago soloed with the Rhode Island Philharmonic, will be appearing with his cellist brother Andres and violinist Andres Cardenes. Together, the threesome makes up the acclaimed Diaz Trio.
The group, which will perform a Mozart divertimento tomorrow, was invited by Isaac Stern to perform at Carnegie's Weill Recital Hall during the hall's centennial.
Tomorrow's program, at the University of Rhode Island's Fine Arts Center, includes music of Handel, Kodaly and Mozart.
The main part of Kim's festival, as most music fans know, takes place on the URI campus during a couple of weeks each summer, giving about five programs in all to packed houses.
But for years, Kim has also been spending time in South County during the off-season, visiting local schools and putting on a children's concert at URI with some of the musicians from the festival. About five years ago, he decided to repeat the program for the general public, and the annual winter concert took off.
Kim, again because of his heavy workload in Philadelphia, won't be playing in the schools this year. But the orchestra is sending violinist Philip Kates to cover for him in April. Kates, who frequently works in schools, is hoping to put on his own children's program, said festival publicist Brian Mitchell.
Actually, both Kim and Roberto Diaz had permission from Philadelphia to appear tomorrow. But the orchestra had second thoughts because it's under the baton of a guest conductor this weekend. Officials were loath to release both the principal violist and violinist, so Kim had to stay. Violinist Maria Bachmann, a familiar face at the festival over the years, agreed to take his place.
Bachmann, who took top honors in the International Fritz Kreisler Competition, will be teaming up with Roberto Diaz for an arrangement of a Handel passascaglia, a set of variations on a repeated bass line. Then she'll join Andres Diaz for Zoltan Kodaly's violin-cello duo.
The concert takes place at 8 p.m. tomorrow in the Fine Arts Center's recital hall. Tickets are $15, $5 for students. Call 789-0665.
