Catching up with . . . airport security
Foreign terrorists did not strike at T.F. Green Airport on Sept. 11, but they still managed to change everything at Rhode Island's principal state airport.
For nearly five years, Green had enjoyed a reputation as New England's "hassle-free" airport, but overnight the terror attacks made flying out of Green as much of a hassle as anywhere else.
Long lines, delays, missed flights... but passengers took it all in stride in the name of greater security, personal safety, the national interest, and indeed, a rebuke to the extremists who had committed acts of war in America.
The new air terminal was divided into two sections, and only ticketed passengers were allowed to go through the security checkpoint and venture into the north and south concourses.
Armed National Guardsmen in fatigues became a common sight in the terminal, as did the state and Warwick police and a beefed-up Airport Police Department.
Bomb-sniffing dogs are next, as soon as trainers at Lackland Air Force Base, in San Antonio, Texas, can produce them.
