Catching up with . . . Happily, days are numbered for Cranston's Gladstone Pool

CRANSTON -- It may just be a matter of time before the abandoned indoor pool at the Gladstone Street Elementary School is a new library and media center.

Led by School Committee member Ben Nascenzi, an ad hoc panel is working to secure grants and other funds to renovate the pool wing of the school on the north side of the city.

Through the group's efforts, and with the backing of the school administration, the renovation project recently qualified for a federal program that would cover much of the interest on a bond issue and won a grant that will make the entire building handicapped accessible.

The pool occupies a 30,000-square-foot, two-story wing of the school. The wing, which also includes locker rooms, is kept locked, although it does have to be heated to keep pipes from freezing.

It has been abandoned for nearly 20 years, ever since water drained out of the pool and city officials determined that it was too expensive to fix it.

Nascenzi, who has been working closely with Democratic Sen. David Igliozzi, said that in addition to the grant and interest aid, the committee has also been able to raise cash and in-kind contributions from local businesses.

He estimated that it will cost between $2.4 million and $3 million to convert the pool area into library space with some additional classrooms.

The School Department is expected to decide within the next month or so how much of that amount it will ask the city to put before voters as a bond-issue proposal next November.
