Catching up with . . . Farewell to St. Xavier's
COVENTRY
-- After 150 years educating high school girls, St. Xavier Academy graduated its last class this summer. The tiny Catholic school finally succumbed to the pressures of increasing costs and dwindling enrollment.
Eleven girls in white gowns received diplomas at the June commencement, leaving 27 undergraduates looking elsewhere to finish their schooling. St. Xavier's population had truly become small: In the academy's early days, on its stately Providence campus, it had graduated more than 100 girls each year.
Notre Dame Regional School took over the St. Vincent de Paul School building, in Anthony village, when St. Xavier left. Notre Dame's 170 students, in kindergarten through Grade 8, enjoy much more space there than they did in their old West Warwick building.
