Catching up with . . . Blueberry Heights
Townspeople already residents knew it, but the census results released this year spelled it out: In percentage, this rural town was the fastest-growing Rhode Island community during the last decade.
About 5,000 people live in West Greenwich now -- almost twice the number counted in 1990. The town has become popular with commuters, who enjoy living in its wooded neighborhoods and traveling a short distance to their urban jobs. Newly built houses make the town's growth plain to see.
In recent months, the Town Council began considering strategies to manage West Greenwich's growth spurt. The council will hold another hearing in February to decide whether to limit the number of single-family homes that may be built in town each year.
