Incumbents retain council seats By SCOTT MAYEROWITZ Journal Staff Writer A total of 6,361 of the 9,566 eligible voters cast ballots yesterday. There are also 252 mail and emergency ballots given out to voters that were not available last night and are not included in these figures. These ballots could affect the outcome of the School Committee race. Democrat Lisa M. Carroll, 34, a registered nurse at Corrigan Mental Health Center, 19-year-old Republican Jeremy I. Brodeur, a University of Rhode Island sophomore, were elected. Independent Denise M. deMedeiros, 41, a registered nurse and education liaison at St. Anne's Hospital, is leading by more than 100 votes for the third spot on the committee. "It feels unbelievable. It does not feel real," Brodeur said last night. "It has not set in yet. I'm ecstatic to be working with three new people and the two existing members." There are now two Democrats, two Independents and one Republican on the committee. Carroll's husband Paul, 43, a maintenance worker with the Massachusetts Department of Corrections, won his bid for reelection to the Town Council. The other four council incumbents also maintained their seats and are joined by Democrats Manuel R. Cabral, 60, a teacher in Fall River and Kenneth J. Fagundes, 57, operations manager at Humphrey's Building Supply Center, both newcomers. "It feels good," Fagundes said. "I had a lot of support out here, especially from my wife who was my campaign manager. For the first time out, I know I did well. I'm pleased." The Democrats remain in control of the council, now holding five seats with two going to the Republicans. In the race for town sergeant, Dennis P. Roies, the 16-year Democratic incumbent, won his ninth straight election against 57-year-old Arthur J. Linhares Jr. who has been his Republican challenger since 1992. Voters rejected by more than 600 votes the only local ballot question. The referendum would have created a contingency plan to pass the budget if a quorum is not reached during the annual Financial Town Meeting.
