Your responses to the crisis, and to our Web site
L e t t e r s
6/24: 'I'm a graduate student in Ph.D. course at KAIST in Korea. I'm a chemical engineering major.' KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) is the top science and engineering education and research institution in Korea.
3/29: 'My grandfather bought a lot at the head of Point Judith Pond for $700 in 1938.' During the week, he worked in the mills of Providence. On weekends he built his "camp" on the waterfront. The water was clear, teeming with fish, crabs, quohaugs and steamers. Ducks, geese, and swans visited daily.
3/1: 'I sincerely commend the Providence Journal for this outstanding use of technology' I wanted to express, for myself and for the students, our appreciation and admiration for the outstanding job that the Journal did in reporting on the spill, and creating the web pages to make the many reports continuously available for public informational use. A large majority of the students used the Journal's web pages on the spill as sources for their essays.
3/1: 'We enjoy the beauty and solitude of places like Ninigret and Sachuest wildlife perserves' My wife and I are frequent visitors to the ocean state and we enjoy the beauty and solitude of places like Ninigret and Sachuest wildlife perserves. Living just 35 miles north of the Big Apple, it is a welcome repose we experience as we walk the paths of Sachuest enjoying the sight of a Northern Harrier or just listening to the peaceful sounds of the ocean.
2/13: The forgotten few from the oil spill There's lots of talk about fishermen, lobstermen and local retail shops, and rightly so, because they are all being hit hard by this spill. However, there are others that seem to be forgotten. And now that the "surface" effects of the spill are starting to wane, concern for the "forgotten few" also seems to be waning in the public's eye, and maybe also in the eyes of others.
2/10: 'Was the rescue effort worth it?' As a volunteer with the bird rescue, I would like to give my opinions on the article 'Was the rescue worth it?' I believe it is very misleading.
2/9: 'Thanks for saving the day' My daughter was assigned a paper on the oil spill right after I had thrown out all my Providence Journals. This web page saved the day. Thank you!
2/7: 'There is hope for humanity' This oil spill further confirms our failure as humans to be successful caretakers of Mother Earth. The efforts by many to mitigate the ill effects on the environment and its inhabitants tells me there is hope for humanity.
2/7: 'Just wanted to add my voice' I really enjoyed the information on your Web page on the oil spill.
2/6: 'I am very impressed with the coverage available' News coverage of the spill was scant in the Washington, D.C. area. Immediately after the spill I tried to locate info on the Internet and found very little. Checking again today, I am very impressed with the coverage available.
2/5: 'I have never seen so much concentrated devastation' In the more than twenty years working for the EPA and responding to major oil spills around the globe, I have never seen so much concentrated devastation to exploitable marine resources as I did at the North Cape oil spill.
2/5: 'It's great to see the commitment you have' My congratulations for great coverage of the R.I. oil spill. I am a public affairs officer for NOAA, and it was gratifying to see the varied angles you touched upon. After having worked as a broadcast journalist for more than two decades, it's great to see the commitment you have not only to your local area but to the region.
2/4: 'If anyone has any insight, I would love to hear from them' I'm sitting at home in Dallas, Texas, reading in horror on my computer, about how this spill has destroyed the delicate ecosystem of the Rhode Island coast.
2/3: 'Wow, then I found you on the Internet!' I returned to Seattle last Sunday (January 28) after a week as the NOAA scientist who coordinated the science meetings and worried that I would miss reading the Providence daily news. Wow, then I found you on the Internet!
2/3: 'I think it's terrific' I think it's terrific that there is a page devoted to the spill where we can get the latest info.
2/2: 'A useful source of information' Good job providing information and articles on the North Cape Spill. This web site has been a useful source of information to people like myself who are interested in assessing the effects of oil spills on natural resources and the industries that rely on these resources.
2/1: 'Kudos to the staff' Kudos to the staff at the Providence Journal. As a former Rhode Islander who likes to keep abreast of R.I. issues, your presence on the Web is greatly appreciated. I can't wait to see more of the Journal in my Web travels.
1/31: 'It was good to read Salty Brine was still enjoying South County' Thanks for these pages. It allows a displaced (misplaced) R.I. native (and a former PROJO employee) to read about the events. These were my ``stomping'' grounds many moons ago . . . from Green Hill to East Matunuck (Jerusalem.) It was good to read Salty Brine was still enjoying South County.
1/30: 'The article peaked my interest' In looking for a research paper topic, I decided to use the devastation which recently hit my home state. The article "The Scandia and a sister tug have a series of mishaps" peaked my interest, and I was wondering where I could get more info on the company's history.
1/30: 'I enjoyed your site' I enjoyed your site. Thanks for putting it up.
1/29:'It's great to see that the ProJo has *finally* hit the Web' It's great to see that the ProJo has *finally* hit the Web. Here are a couple of thoughts:
1/29: 'Nice job on the Web site' Nice job on Web site. Keep it up.
1/29: 'Who were the consultants?' I am curious as to who the consultants were who did such a nice job (congratulations!) for you in such a short time.
1/29: 'I think it's great you've made Horizons available on the Web' I think it's great you've made Horizons available on the Web. It looks very good, and will add to people's understanding of the spill.
1/28: 'There are a number of errors in the reports' My name is Robert P. Hill, and I am the president and naval architect of a Massachusetts firm, Ocean Tug & Barge Engineering. My specialty, for more than 20 years, is the design of ocean going tugs and barges.
1/28: 'Their story was highly factual and correct in its representation of the industry' Our company, Maritime Information Systems, located in Bristol, R.I., has been maintaining a web site called the Maritime Global Net. Our site is the largest maritime related site presently on-line, with over 270 links to commercial maritime organizations and company sites.
1/28: 'Is it too late to do anything about the responsible parties?' I think that more investigation needs to be done into why that barge is still lying offshore and on one of our busiest sections of the shoreline.
1/28: 'Thanks' Thanks.
1/28: 'Glad to see you are upgrading to the next level of technology' Can't comment on the Web site 'cause I am down here in Arizona with an obsolete notebook that has only DOS and no memory extension. But, I am glad to see you are upgrading to the next level of technology.
1/28: 'I think you did an excellent job' I think you did an excellent job of putting together a Web site on deadline. It does exactly what you want it to do -- tell the story and give people an organized system to find additional information.
1/27: 'A credible venture for your first attempt at putting your toes in the "web water" ' I just spent a few minutes scanning your website, and I think it's very well done.
1/27: 'Very nice job' Very nice job on the Web site. It's easy to use and looks great! Congrats, and keep up the good work.
1/23: 'Does anyone know the names?' Does anyone know who the two crew members were who risked their lives to go back to the barge and unsuccessfully tried to lower the barge's anchor?
