3/29/96 The Pond
My grandfather bought a lot at the head of Point Judith Pond for $700 in 1938. During the week, he worked in the mills of Providence. On weekends he built his "camp" on the waterfront. The water was clear, teeming with fish, crabs, quohaugs and steamers. Ducks, geese, and swans visited daily. Last summer was my 46th summer on "Salt Pond". The water was clear and full of life. Within 200 yards of "gramps camp" my boys caught bluefish, weakfish and striped bass in the 18 inch range. In our single offshore trip they landed 20 flounder in the waters off Thurston Pond, the largest being 26 inches. Pictures of the North Cape disaster on CNN broke my heart. Your Internet coverage brings me home to the pond on these cold "winter of '96" nights. Its been wonderful to be able to follow your coverage, share in the tradgedy and hope for the future. Without these words coming into my home online, I would be unable to look forward to my 47th summer on the pond. Thanks to your clever, innovative, and timely adoption of Internet publishing I can tell my sons in Delaware there will be fish in Rhode Island this summer. This has to be the best "topic site" I've seen on the web. Thanks from out-of-state. Carl Jacobson Newark, DE and Wakefield, RI carlj@udel.edu
