'I sincerely commend the Providence Journal for this outstanding
use of technology'
When the North Cape ran aground I was teaching two sections of Environmental
Science to 90 business majors at Johnson & Wales University in Providence. I assigned
the students to prepare an essay on 'The Cost of the North Cape Oil Spill' for
our final exam, held this week.
I wanted to express, for myself and for the students, our appreciation and
admiration for the outstanding job that the Journal did in reporting on the
spill, and creating the web pages to make the many reports continuously available
for public informational use. A large majority of the students used the Journal's
web pages on the spill as sources for their essays. As I had hoped, the students
took the meaning of the term "Cost" far beyond its financial meaning and wrote
eloquently of the emotional and environmental costs. Many of them are international
students and they were impressed by the solidarity of the state in responding
to the crisis, and to the extent of the preparations that led to such a well
coordinated and effective management of all aspects of the situation.
I sincerely commend the Providence Journal for this outstanding use of technology
to alert and inform the public on vital issues in our community.
Sincerely,
Dr. Matthew H. McConeghy
