SPORTS WRITING CATEGORY FIRST PLACE The issue has been extensively covered by national media. The writer, however, did a good job forming his own opinion presumably based on what he read in print media and saw on TV. Well written and good flow that keeps the reader interested. Good use of quote by U.S. Basketball coach to convey to the reader the attitude of the team. Good job of backing up his opinions with facts (i.e. "average margin of victory was less than 5 points per game"). SECOND PLACE The writer has done an outstanding job taking an event many of his readers encounter on a regular basis (the Interscholastic League blue card) and relating it to a national issue. Good use of citing examples of poor sportsmanship, which he collected from other media sources. Interesting observation that, "No one remembers the outcome of these games. Rather the focus is on the display of unsportsmanlike conduct." THIRD PLACE Good job telling the story of a team that is a big winner, but nobody seems
to care. Good comparison with other East Providence teams that receive great
fan support. Good use of quotes to tell the story. Obviously did his legwork
talking to both players and the coach. Good insight into a high school sports
issue - "It is never easy to put together successful teams in public schools,
"etc. |
