In-Depth Reporting FIRST PLACE West Wind, Cranston High School West – Marissa Lizotte Feature editor Marissa Lizotte tells the timely and compelling story of a science teacher who has been mobilized to fight in the Iraq war. She reported the main story thoroughly, exploring the teacher’s patriotism, the impact on his family, how he is being replaced, and his reflections on leaving his community and his family. Most impressive was the initiative Lizotte showed in covering the Army Reserve deployment ceremony on October 5, in which the governor, and other state and military officials, addressed the science teacher, his fellow recruits, and their families. This reporter truly pursued this story. Excellent work.
Reporter Helen Manning displays a strong sense of news and enterprise in her story about the high school tardiness epidemic and the strategy to curb the problem. She demonstrates the acumen of a good reporter, taking care to get different sides of the issues as they are raised by the administrators and students. The story was informative and entertaining, with a strong use of quotes. Good job. THIRD PLACE Asst. Opinion Editor Sami Turner reports thoroughly and clearly on the impact
a budget deficit is having at the high school. The story relies on multiple
sources, which is important. The reporter does an excellent job of anticipating
the reader’s questions. The reader comes away with a good sense of the
school tensions and climate (and the forecast for colder days as the administration
tries to save on heating costs.). Well done. |
