FIRST PLACE

Article: Opportunity for Koreans at SG comes with challenges
Author: Alex Kalita, The Red & White, St. George’s School

Alex Kalita’s article is well-written and insightful, deftly weaving in details of Korean culture and American attitudes toward foreign students. Kalita did her research and obtained good quotes from a variety of sources, leaving the reader with a vivid impression of the challenges Korean students face when attempting to adjust to American life. The piece was longer than many others in the category, yet Kalita’s sharp writing made for a quick and informative read. A winner.

SECOND PLACE

Article: In the Spotlight: Suburban White Boys
Author: Brittany Nugent, The Current Wave, North Kingstown High School

Brittany Nugent’s profile of an up and coming high school band has just the right touch. It’s light and funny, but also answers any questions the reader might have about a group of suburban teens trying to make their mark in “gangsta” rap music. The first paragraph instantly draws in the reader with its description of a typical suburban home “quiver[ing]” during the band’s practice sessions. The rest of the article doesn’t disappoint, chronicling the Suburban White Boys’ rise to local stardom. The article ended on the perfect “word”. This piece was a close challenger for the number one spot.

THIRD PLACE

Article: Breast Cancer Awareness
Author: Ashley Traupman, West Wind, Cranston High School West

Ashley Traupman’s article is well-researched, giving a clear picture of how breast cancer has affected her high school community and local efforts to combat the disease. Traupman uses good quotes from breast cancer survivors, the daughter of a survivor, and students trying to raise money for breast cancer research.
