"Congratulations. Your illustration 'Today’s Nation' has won second place in The Providence Journal Scholastic Journalism Competition. I found your commentary on reading books versus television watching astute and compelling. Reading is such a great way of gathering information, whether it is for entertainment or learning. It often seems in direct conflict with the passive nature of watching television. Your illustration spoke to this issue very nicely. I encourage you to continue drawing. I believe this will give you the finished look to encourage future success. Thank you for entering the competition."

For Your Information

"Congratulations. Your illustration 'Wilbert' has won third place in The Providence Journal Scholastic Journalism Competition. I thought  'Wilbert’ was well done overall. I especially liked the way you used the dog to act as a counterpart to the main character. Thank you for entering the competition. Well done. Perhaps trying a little variety in the panels. For example, using an extreme close-up of the dog may drive a point home better and offer the strip a bit more variety. Some shading in the drawings would offer contrast that would tend to draw the reader’s eye to the areas that the artist (you) would want to emphasize. All this comes with practice and continual observation of those professional cartoon artists’ whose work you may admire. This expertise, I believe, will come with time and experience, so I encourage you to continue drawing."
