The Providence Journal Scholastic Journalism Competition

High School - Best In-Depth Reporting Category

Colleen Shea
Middletown High School
The Wave
"ISR-In School Restriction"

The judges said…
"Colleen Shea's story on "In school restrictions" meets many of the tests of a good newspaper story. This reporter found an interesting topic — readers want to read stories about crime and punishment. Working with an interesting topic, she proceeded to report the story. She brought the reader excellent 'telling details' about the room — counting the cubicles and drawing an image in the reader's mind. The story carries opinion from a range of people and covers their views clearly and in logical sequence. The quotes used were effective. The story is fair and balanced — it is not a screed either for or against the policy. The reader is left with lots of room to form an opinion — this is a true of good journalism. The structure of the story was sound and the piece was very well written. Excellent work!"
