The Providence Journal Scholastic Journalism Competition

Middle/Junior High School Division - Best Writing Category

Michael Nozick
Blessed Sacrament
The Mustard Seed
"Bishop Receives Award"

The judges said…
"The one thing that struck me about this piece was how well the author used word pictures. As the reader, I could 'see'’ all that was going on during Bishop Robert McManus’ visit to the Church of the Blessed Sacrament. I could 'feel' the emotion from the Bishop’s homily and talk to the congregation. That quality in writing is one of the most important – to bring the reader into the story so he/she can feel as if he/she was there as it was happening. The author did this very impressively. The use of outstanding adjectives and adverbs – 'gliding to the beautiful strains of music,' for example – helped make this a long piece that had a nice, even flow to it, which is another important quality to any story. And the ending – 'we also enjoyed tasty treats' – injects a little humor into this very well done piece."
