Obituaries

The Providence Journal understands that the death of a loved one is a difficult time for family members.

To help create the perfect obituary message, The Providence Journal has created this brochure to explain. . .how to place an obituary, the publication deadlines, pricing and other pertinent details.

PUBLICATION DEADLINES:

• The DEADLINE for submitting an obituary and accompanying photograph* is 6 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 4:30 p.m. on Friday and 6 p.m. on Saturday. For Monday publication, the deadline is 4 p.m. on Sunday. (We encourage funeral directors to submit an obituary as early as possible.)

SUBMISSION CRITERIA:

• PHOTOGRAPHS may be e-mailed to the Journal (see contact information). Please be sure to send a photo ONLY of the deceased, cropping out any other people in the photograph. E-mailed photos should be scanned as black & white. The image size should be 150 DPI. The scan should be saved as a JPEG and e-mailed as an attachment. Photos as well as logos and insignias can be added to obituaries and will be billed at the agate line rate to the extent they lengthen the obituary. Photos will appear 15/16” wide by 1-1/4” deep.

• INCLUDE the name of the funeral home and phone number where someone may be reached the night before publication in case of questions. All obituaries must be verified and final cost accepted before publication.
• All obituaries will include a FREE Death Notice referencing the deceased’s name, age, town and date of passing.
• All obituaries appear online.

NOTE: Obituaries will not be accepted by the News Department or Regional News Bureaus of The Providence Journal. Obituaries will be handled strictly by The Providence Journal Classified Department.
