Who is a fan?

There's the 65-year-old owner of a trucking company at Daytona with his 44-year-old daughter: ``She was born during race week 1957, when they were still racing on the beach. Once I knew wife and baby were healthy, I left for the races. On her sixth birthday, I asked her what she wanted. She said, `go to Daytona,' and she's been coming with me every year since.''

And a woman from Hueytown, Ala., at Talladega Superspeedway who is directing media parking and has brought her two young children with her: ``I've been around racing all my life — my dad worked at the track for 29 years.''

Two Jeff Burton fans at Michigan International Speedway, a married couple: he's a 48-year-old teacher of biochemistry and she's a 45-year-old cancer-research technician. ``We're kind of closet NASCAR fans — none of our friends can believe it. If there is such a thing as a typical fan, we're not it!''

They are dental hygienists and DJs; they manage nightclubs and supermarkets. They are children and senior citizens and every age in between.
