BAND SPOTLIGHT BY VAUGHN WATSON
Jordan often uses Masons to hone his pop craft

Who he is: Kraig Jordan.

What he plays: Acoustic rock with pop influences.

Singer/songwriter Jordan, 29, started writing songs when he was 13 and living in North Kingstown. He has assembled 22 locally affiliated musicians to record or play out with him at various times, including David Narcizo, the former drummer for Throwing Muses.

He calls the assemblage The Masons. In Change Me Back (Irregular Records), The Masons aim sparse instrumentation outward, creating breathing room for Jordan's moody -- but lyrically probing -- bits of introspection. For instance, Ghosts In The Attic deals with feelings of guilt, and is paced by Jordan's conversational storyteller's voice, while a patient acoustic guitar and bass occupy the background.

"It's pretty emotional stuff,'' Jordan said. "If someone is listening to my album, they are really listening to me.''

Recording: Jordan hooked up with musicians for Change Me Back over the past two years, recording and mixing the CD, his first, at Dream Edit studios in Newport.

Where to hear him: The CD release party is tonight at Island Arts, 2 Pelham St. in Newport, from 6 to 9 p.m.; call 848-2775.

The show will mingle video images with sounds from the band's songs. Susan McNally, the Rhode Island artist currently living in New York who designed Jordan's CD cover art, will display other works.

And Jordan will set up interactive stations where people can do nearly whatever they'd like with microphones and video equipment. "If they want to turn the tape into spaghetti, pull it out and cut it up, I don't care,'' he said. "I really want it to be fun and interesting.''

Or hear them now: To hear samples from The Masons' Change Me Back , call Journal Line at 277-7777 (or toll-free outside the Providence calling area at 800-992-9255) and punch in category code BAND (2263).
