Southern Fried Swang Thang is 'a blues-rock thing'

By ANDY SMITH
Journal-Bulletin Pop Music Writer

The band: Vic Foley's Southern Fried Swang Thang, from East Providence.

Who they are: Vic Foley, guitar, vocals; Mike Vieira, bass; Jean-Paul Benitez, drums.

What they play: "It's a blues-rock thing," said Foley. "I classify it as blues, even though there are a lot of other things going on."

Influences: Any time a young white guitarist fronts a blues trio, everyone thinks Stevie Ray Vaughan. "When you're up there with a trio, playing a Strat (Fender Stratocaster guitar) loud and singing, people say that," said Foley. "He's an influence, but not a real direct influence, the way he is with Kenny Wayne Shepherd. I like a lot of the real old guys - T-Bone Walker, Guitar Slim. A lot of the songs in our set were written before 1945." Dave Howard, of Dave Howard & the High Rollers, has been a big help; Duke Robillard and Ronnie Earl are important guitar influences.

What's a Swang Thang?: "It just a fun thing to say," said Foley. Foley is from Rhode Island, not the South.

Plans: The band has signed a record deal with Liquid Blue Records, which belongs to Paul Roidoulis, co-owner of The Call nightclub in Providence. The Swang Thang is currently recording a disc scheduled for release in April. Once that's out, the band will hit the road. "That will be a big step for all of us," Foley said. "We'll quit our jobs and go on the road for seven or eight months."
