1. What type of content can I find in
projo.com that I won't find in The Providence Journal?
Projo.com's editorial team provides local news updates on business
days, called the Digital Bulletin. As of Feb. 18, 2002, the timing of this has
been changed to publication as soon as possible after news happens. A similar
Weekend Bulletin between 5 and 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
The site is also committed to delivering major breaking national
and world news as needed throughout the day, via its home page. Also available
are links throughout the site to automated updates from the Associated Press,
which operates 24 hours, 7 days a week, for regional, national and world news
and by subject.
Projo.com does not publish all stories and photos from The Providence Journal,
focusing instead on local and regional content primarily written by Journal
staff. However, the content it does select from The Journal is posted online
every day, shortly after midnight.
Projo.com also enhances newspaper content with online-only features, creates
in-depth informational packages and photo slideshows, and routinely adds links
to related Wed sites.
The site also incorporates interactive features such as video and audio,
forums, polls, archives, user uploads, searchable classifieds and other
electronic transactions. It also offers a "portal"service to Web sites of Rhode Island interest.
2. What content from the The
Providence Journal is not available on projo.com?
Some content is not available on projo.com.
Those items include:
- Most national and world news provided by wire services, which projo.com
does not have the right to re-use online. However, projo.com does have an
arrangement with the Associated Press wire service for such content online, continuously
updated 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Projo.com does not publish all photos,
advertising or some local news stories from the suburban sections of The
Journal.
However, projo.com’s paid archives service may also include Journal
staff-written stories that were not selected for publication on projo.com, but

3. How can I locate the information I
want on projo.com?
Projo.com is set up to allow readers to find information in several ways.
They may use its navigation bar, which provides a gateway to the main subject
areas of the site; the detailed menu at http://www.projo.com/sitemap,
or the various search features located throughout the site.
Each search feature operates differently according to its content, such as
current news stories or classified ads.
There is no one single search program that will browse all content
throughout the site. Please click on
the search tips links provided with all search features for more information.
Past, staff-written news articles from The Providence Journal are also
available back to 1983 from our archives area. While searching is free, there

11. It looks like certain sections of
projo.com have not been updated. What's wrong?
We can assure you that projo.com is being updated regularly. However, some Web browsers "cache" pages of
a site for faster downloads, resulting in some users receiving an older copy of
our site or a page. We suggest clicking
on the "refresh" or "reload"
button to display the most recent version of our site.
If you are using Microsoft’s Internet Explorer and the "refresh"
button does not work, go to your browser tool bar and pull down the "Tools"
menu and go to "Internet Options". Then, on the "General"
page, under "Temporary Internet files" click "Delete Files."
This should allow you to see the most up-to-date version of our Web site.
If you are using Netscape’s Navigator, go to the Edit button, choose
Preferences. Then choose Advanced, and then choose Cache. You will see the
option of clearing your cache. Click on that, which should then allow you to
call in a "fresh" version of the page you seek.
AOL users should be aware that AOL "caches", or copies, our site into
its main computers as a way to speed the viewing time of pages for its members,
so you may not necessarily be viewing the most current news on our site. If you are using the IE browser via AOL,
follow the directions for IE above. If not, and you are unable to refresh your
page, contact AOL’s technical support.

12. I saw a photo in the newspaper
that I couldn't find online. How can I get a copy?
Projo.com carries selected
photographs from the Journal each day, as
well as photos to illustrate special reports, online galleries and other
such features.
However, reprints of photos by Journal photographers recently
published in The Providence Journal are available for sale. For information
on how to order and fees, call the Photo Reprint line at (401) 277-7007. A recorded
message will provide the details. Or you may

Note: As of November 2001, an online archive service

13. How do I submit an obituary for publication? What about death notices?

like to download. Can I purchase the photo I found on projo.com?
You may download photos from projo.com to your hard drive for
personal use.
Reprints of recently published photos by Journal photographers are available
for sale. For information on how to order and fees, call the Photo Reprint line
at (401) 277-7007. A recorded message will provide the details. Or you may

If you are interested in a photo published on projo.com taken by a non-Journal
source, such as the Associated Press, you need to contact that source directly
for purchase information.
An online archive service
for photos is not available.
15. I often bookmark stories I find
on projo.com, but when I go back to the story a week later, I get a "file
not found" error or a different story. What's wrong?
Most news stories only stay on projo.com for up to three days to seven
days before they
are removed from the Web site and no longer available for viewing. The exceptions
may be archived collections for special reports, series and other special collections
of information.
If you are looking for a specific story that appeared online and can no longer
access it, you can try searching our archives. The archives section houses
staff-written Providence Journal stories back to 1983. The address for the

The archives may also include Journal staff-written stories that were not
selected for publication on projo.com, but did appear in the newspaper.
16. I posted a message on the bulletin board,
but it has not shown up yet. Why?
Messages to projo.com’s main bulletin boards are posted automatically.
However, projo.com retains the right to delete messages that do not conform
with its bulletin board rules. For details on those rules, please go to:

You may also be experiencing technical difficulty. For technical

17. I uploaded a photo to one of projo.coms interactive photo galleries, but it
has not shown up yet. Why?
Each photo is previewed by projo.com staff before it is uploaded to a photo gallery. This prevents misuse of this interactive feature and allows for
checking for any technical problems. Your upload should appear on the site
within one business day, not including weekends or holidays.
18. I uploaded a music clip to projo.com's music site but it has not shown up
yet. Why?
Each clip is previewed by projo.com staff before it is uploaded to the
projo.com/music collection. This prevents misuse of this interactive feature and
allows for checking for any technical problems. Your upload should appear on
the site within one business day, not including weekends or holidays.
19. I uploaded a piece of art to projo.coms art gallery, but it has not shown
up yet. Why?
