GOD SENT HIS 911 CALL

I NEED FIREMEN, POLICEMEN AND RESCUE WORKERS TOO.
MUCH WORK TO BE DONE IN HEAVEN AND I NEED YOU.

YOU SEE TOWERS OF POWDER, DUST AND DEBREE.
OPENING HEARTS IS THE TWIN STAIRWAY STRAIGHT TO ME.

THESE ARE SAINTS AND ANGELS WHOM CANNOT DIE.
YOU SEE THEM NOW HIGH IN A CLEAR BRILLIANT SKY.

WHY ARE YOU MOURNING, HEAVEN CANNOT WAIT.
YOU FEEL THE EARTH RUMBLE AND QUAKE.
I ONLY TOLD GABRIELLE OPEN ALL THE GATES.

I KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE DONE AND WHERE YOU HAVE BEEN.
YOU DEMONSTRATE YOUR GREATNESS TIME AND AGAIN.

DO NOT FILL YOUR HEARTS WITH MURDER AND HATE.
ALL THE HEAVENS ARE CRYING AND STILL IT IS NOT TOO LATE.

I SHOWED YOU PLUMES POWDER BLUE, PINK AND GRAY.
YES, ALL THE HEAVENS ARE CRYING AND STILL WE ALL PRAY.

YOU HEARD BUILDINGS ROAR AND GROWL.
I TELL YOU GABRIELLE WAS SHAKING OUT HIS DUSTY TOWEL.

NO NEED TO STAND IN LONG MOURNING LINES.
TRUE LOVE HEALS ALL AND THE TIE THAT BINDS.

NO NEED TO BRUSH OFF THE POWDER AND CYNDERS.
I NEED ALL THIS FOR BUILDING STRONGER TIMBERS.

YOU DO NOT ASK FOR A SIGN, NOT EVEN WHISPER WHY.
NOR WHERE IS THE MEANING IN A SILENT SKY.

YOU MUST NOT LOOK BACK-STAND PROUD, STAND TALL.
YES BELIEVE ME I WANT YOU ALL.
THIS IS THE MESSAGE IN MY 911 CALL.

IT DOES NOT MATTER YOU BE WOMAN OR MAN.
I GATHER ALL YOUR HEARTS WITH THESE TWO HANDS.

Susan Michaud Bahringer

IN PEACE YOU REMAIN

I DO NOT NEED A MONUMENT FOR REMEMBERING YOU.
EXCEPT, WHEN I BUILD IT, YOU ARE WRAPPED IN RED, WHITE AND BLUE.

NOT TOO TALL-JUST THE RIGHT SIZE FOR ALL BRAVE WOMEN ASND MEN.

ONE WEARING A FIREMEN'S HELMET AND ONE WEARING NYPD BLUE.
STILL THERE IS ANOTHER, AND THAT BRAVE PERSON IS YOU.

WEARING CROSSES, SCRUBS AND ORDINARY JEANS.
MOTHERS, FATHERS, SISTERS, BROTHERS, NEIGHBORS AND FRIENDS.
TOO MANY BARELY OUT OF THEIR TEENS.

I SEE YOU STANDING PROUD, TALL AND STRONG.
DOES IT MATTER WHO WAS RIGHT AND WHO WAS WRONG?
HOLDING HANDS THAT ARE WHITE, YELLOW, RED AND BROWN.
I ONLY KNOW YOU CAME FROM A WORLD'S HOMETOWN.

YOU ARE WEARING GARLANDS OF OLIVE AND DOVES ADORN YOUR FEET.
STEADFAST ATOP RUBBLE THAT MADE AN EARTH QUAKE, THUNDER AND SCREECH.

YOU DID NOT TIRE, FALTER OR DIE IN VEIN.
YOUR FINAL TRIUMPH AROUND OUR WORLD PROCLAIMS,
PEACE ON EARTH WE PRAY REMAINS.

THURSDAY
SEPT. 20:

Dear Editor:

Last week's attacks were not merely out of hatred or to make a point. They were a planned military operation to weaken the United States grip on the world. In World War II, the bombing of Pearl Harbor was meant to weaken our military presence in Japanese influenced areas. Islamic fundamentalists made a direct hit against our financial and military power.

Islamic fundamentalists are making inroads in every part of the world. Outside of the Middle East there are significant fundamentalist uprisings in countries such as Indonesia, which has the largest Islamic population in the world. We and our way of life represent all that is evil to their adherants. With our influence and wealth we are the biggest obstacle to expansion. They look to weaken our grip as they force themselves on the common man and entice the disenfranchised in Islamic areas of the world.

At this time, supported by reports on Bin Laden, there are most likely isolated cells of Islamic terrorists with nuclear attack as their goal. In their minds, the fundamentalist way could survive and thrive in a world where the nuclear pit has been opened. If we act rashly and wipe out all known terrorists, we may lose our most likely connection to the worse enemy. We should instead take a measured, unified approach. Wound them enough to keep them at bay. In their weakened state, bring in spies, follow their life lines, and rout the other nests. Furthermore, we need to unite with the entire world in isolating the terrorists and any countries proving to be uncooperative. This unification of cultures may serve to morally debilitate the terrorists, as well.

The Islamic fundamentalists have the upper hand in a nuclear confrontation caused by their terrorist factions. At large, they are not our enemies or potential nuclear targets. Would countries like Indonesia, with a large fundamentalist faction, be a nuclear target for instance? Nevertheless, the primary reason for last week's and potential nuclear attacks in the future is for the advancement of the fundamentalism in the world.

THE SILENCE OF THE SKY

THE VIEW WAS STRANGELY DIFFERENT

AS WE LOOKED UP TOWARDS THE SUN

WE ALL COULD FEEL THE QUIET

FROM THE DAMAGE THAT WAS DONE

PARALYZED AND FROZEN

WE PRAYED IT WASN’T TRUE

AND THANKED THE LORD FOR PEOPLE

WHO KNEW JUST WHAT TO DO

IT WAS QUITE AN EERIE FEELING

NO PLANES WERE PASSING BY

NO JET ENGINES DID WE HEAR

JUST THE SILENCE OF THE SKY

UNITED WE WILL RISE AGAIN

UP INTO THAT SKY

TO MAKE THE FUTURE SAFE AND STRONG

AND WITH PRIDE RAISE OUR FLAG HIGH

Freedom in land

Freedom in thee land,
For whom holds thee rights?
Is it I.

Or-
Is it thee, whom visits?

Is it I, whom will be called the keeper of these acres?
For it is I whom preserves the history of what is seen,
And I, whom builds visions upon the future that is, unseen.

But it is I, whom for a freedom of peace stands tall at the gates,
In guard fighting the wolves, whom try to destroy.

And it is I whom finds the rights to this land,
simply by standing up, for what is right.

And it will be I,
whom chooses not to allow even wolves, to come and take
a freedom in peace, in this land!

WEDNESDAY
SEPT. 19:

In the face of the unspeakable tragedy that occurred this September 11th, we can take solace from the fact that the barbarians that perpetrated the cowardly acts are now discovering that their belief they would be rushed to heaven was false. These criminals are RIGHT NOW suffering agony infinitely worse that that which they inflicted on all of those innocent people, who are truly the ones now in heaven.

The hard work is left to those us still here, particularly the families of the murdered victims. Though our anger is a righteous one, we must at all costs prevent it from mutating into hate while considering a response to this treachery.

Specifically, we must avoid approaches such as "kill them all, sort the guilty out later". We must, to honor the innocent victims if for no other reason, remember that we are BETTER than those animals that plan and commit these atrocities. We must at all times keep foremost in our minds that our restraint, adherence to the rule of law and well-considered administration of justice is precisely what MAKES us better, not just our military, intellectual and economic might.

We must at all costs avoid the death spiral that Israel and Palestine have sucked each other into, to their mutual ultimate undoing. It dishonors all of them together and they live in perpetual fear and loathing.

As disgusted and angry as I became watching that uneducated Palestinian street rabble celebrate the atrocities, I reminded myself that the people that died did so in part because they represented a democratic way of life that allows extremely objectionable views to be voiced. We are strong because we allow this offensive side of freedom, not soft as the hate-filled small minds who did this wrongly assumed. It will be proved when we mete out punishment, and change the face the world to make it unsafe for them in all quarters, as we did after WWII. While we don't need to fund the ugly speech with aid, Americans do not aid the destruction of people for chanting and marching.

Harboring terrorists, however, brings the most severe of sanctions under our new national policy, as recently announced by Pres. Bush. As the supremely strong and organized people we are, we shall provide proof of harboring where it happened, as swiftly as we closed the net on information concerning the cowardly terrorists now suffering perdition.

We must take care to recognize that our next actions will reshape the face of the entire world, and shall set a precedent for generations. It is up to us to define what happens to terrorism, as we now shoulder this mantle in our leadership of the civilized world. We will set the example with our allies at our side, and we must remember why these people became our allies. It was not out of fear, but out of respect for our virtues, which we must hold dear as we take action against those who would destroy civilization.

SATURDAY AND SUNDAY
SEPT. 15 and 16:

I wrote a poem to remember the innocent victims of the WTC attack this past Tuesday. Such random and mindless violence comes as such a shock to my system, it still seems sorta surreal to me. My only hope is that justice is served and America is allowed to heal. United we stand, apart we will fall like those towers.

I hate being sad and I don't wanna cry
Why did so many innocent people have to die
It doesn't make sense and it never will
Why did innocent blood have to spill
We're gonna hunt these people down
Our pain we can never fully drown
This isn't fair to anyone at all
To see those splendid towers fall....

Just a little something I wrote at a time when tragedy has hit our Country, and affecting the world.

A Tribute to the World

September 11th, 2001 was a day like none other,
An attack brought onto our country, our sisters and brothers.

This tragedy has taken the lives of so many good souls,
Ranging from the small children and on through the old.

This nation is pulling together in hope to save lives,
To bring home survivors to their children, husbands, and wives.

The President and his staff working around the clock,
To find the perpetrators who have caused this world shock.

Firefighters, policemen, medical staff and volunteers,
Helping one another in many numbers facing numerous fears.

News reporters keeping the world informed as well as they’re able,
And thousands of others helping to try to keep everything stable.

To all of you mentioned, and to those of you not,
The world would like to thank you, from the bottom of our hearts.

To the families of loved ones lost to this horrific act,
The world’s praying with you, this is a fact.

For people to do this is ultimately wrong,
Now is the time for the U.S. To stand strong.

Our patience is as precious as a genuine gem,
But let it be known we’re going to get them.

Our nation has always been the land of the free,
And this is the way it will continue to be.

We’re at a time in our lives when we need to come together as one,
And do whatever it takes to get the job done.

To everyone, who reads this, just know in your heart,
Life is sometimes taken for granted so appreciate what you’ve got.

This message goes out to the world as a whole,
Life, Liberty, and Happiness are our common goal.

Dear Editor

Sometimes lessons come from places you don't expect them. There was an episode of the old Superman series starring George Reeves, where Jimmy Olsen is knocked to the ground by a thug. You expect Superman to jump in, but instead Jimmy makes a surprise move. Instead of getting up he sweeps his body around on the floor, grabs the guy's legs and topples him to the ground. I never forgot this and a few years later actually got to use it in high school successfully against a bully.

This lesson may apply as well to our reaction to being knocked down by extremists. Rather than get up too quickly and expose ourselves to worse danger, let's be smart about it. The best strategies are made when the enemy thinks you are weak. The worst are made in stubborn retaliation. We should stay low for a while. From this position we can throw the enemy off balance. After all, they are expecting us to react in fearless anger.

Another lesson learned was that after I knocked my opponent down, I head and scissor locked him and would not let go until his friend negotiated a deal. Likewise we need to apply pressure on the terrorists until the governments they represent tell them to back off. They need to know they are not needed or wanted by anybody. Just as bullies fade away and often amount to nothing in the adult world, these terrorists need to become obsolete through a new spirit of cooperation.

On Tuesday a friend of mine, Bill Weems, was killed by terrorists on the United Airlines flight that flew into the the second World Trade Center tower. The morning's national tragedy was transformed at mid-day, when I found out that Bill was on the plane, to a very personal loss. There are no words for this. I do; however, have words for some other events in this nation. Since the terrorists committed this murder, there have been terrorist recruiting agents working in this country to swell the ranks of these criminals. They have been operating openly on our streets for several days now and I don't understand how they are getting away with it. Each rock thrown through the window of an Arab American business, each bigoted epithet spoken against a woman in traditional Islamic dress, every assault on the person of someone of Middle Eastern descent is a recruitment of yet another fanatic to the ranks of the enemies of our country and every one of these acts brings a smile to the face of Osama Ben Laden.

To those who are doing our enemies a favor, I say come back across the line in the sand that was drawn by thugs hiding falsely behind Islam. Step back across to the right side of the line and stand with your AMERICAN brothers and sisters, who in diversity are now united as we not been in many decades against a common foe. Stop doing favors for our enemies. Come back!

Subject: New York City -- The Tribute

World War II ends and a sailor in New York City kisses a girl and it becomes instant history. New York is a city that symbolizes the future of America; even after a devastating war people could come to New York and derive not only pleasure but also a measure of optimism. New Yorkers show their spirit and the kinds of problems they have to overcome in carving out a new America and it gave citizens of the world an appreciation of the resilient American.

New York City symbolized to America at the end of World War II that once the war was over America could again return to a buoyant, optimistic life.

Today our nation is in mourning at the loss of life in New York City and at the same time we pay tribute to the many friends that we have there. You may say, "I have never been to New York, I never met anybody there," but as Rotarians we have learned over the years that "strangers" are friends we have never met. In a disaster there are no strangers, there are no acquaintances -- only friends.

Once in a great while our path down the road of life crosses that of a calamity, we are thrust into events that challenge our ability to reason, to even question the almighty. That is how many of us now feel. Why! Why! Why us Lord? Our country has had a long history of facing catastrophes and such events have proved to be a catalyst that forges the American spirit and determination to overcome. "Why" has always been the resounding lament of a grieving heart -- and we do grieve today, but in the proud history of our Country, this lament has never been cried in vain.

We present America to the World, unvarnished, everything is in the open - this kind of freedom has a price. Radicals hiding under the cloak of democracy and freedom have long been embarked to destroy this nation. The world has many more good people than evil. Our good is unrivaled, unchallenged, and unquestioned in the world. America's most priceless asset is it's people -- and as we have seen in New York City, their indomitable self-confidence and their impressible optimism has been apparent for the entire world to witness. When we see brothers and sisters forging ahead in the face of adversity, danger, and death, we note the resilience of the American character - admirable, inspiring and soul-stirring.

New Yorkers are standing in mile-long lines to donate blood; they are operating the cranes; wearing the hard hats; driving ambulances; rendering medical care; feeding the multitudes; consoling families; and sadly, recovering the dead.

To them we send our Aloha and thanks and extend across the ocean, across the deserts, across the mountains, to the nation's heart, our hands of friendship. Your spirit radiates around the world and as you endure the unendurable; bear the unbearable, and begin the healing process and binding our wounds, we want you to know that we care and we are willing to share in this suffering and pray that goodness and grace will return to you sevenfold.

Mahalo nui loa and God Bless you, God Bless New York City and God Bless America.

To the Editor:

In light of events i wish to express my thoughts there is only one point in all this and that is retaliation is a must. it must be swift, just and powerful in nature so as to send a message to all others: WE WILL NOT LAY DOWN AND ROLL over. you have not just awoken a sleeping giant but you awoke a sleeping giant relentless wolverine that will hunt you down anywhere in the world and send you to the holy court!!!!

In Our Dreams

In our dreams
we dream of being in this perfect world
We did not know of mass murder, nor to be afraid of war
We rush through our lives with only dreams of making money
What can we buy next, what do we want
Is it the Mercedes or maybe that Crown Victorian House.
And don't forget the fine clothes
The trips to Paris or maybe Madrid

Have we forgotten what is more important
Our friendships our families
Our peace of mind
In Our Dreams

I remember a time when neighbors knew each other
When they were there for each other
They would sit on their stairs and talk to each other
We don't really even know who our neighbors today
We are to busy trying to get all those things

Even though this has been such a sad time for so many people
I think it has brought back the one American Dream
Caring, helping and getting to know our neighbors and realizing
That is what makes a person rich Not the things we have, but the things we can do to help others
That is what a true American is
This is what makes us proud Americans

I have a daughter in the United States Marine Corps. She is on standby to go overseas as other armed services are. On September 11, 2001 in the evening after all the terrorist attacks took place, she sat down giving it alot of thought. My daughter is VERY proud to be a Marine and I am VERY proud of her. She wrote a poem and sent it to me that evening. I want to share it with you in hopes you will share it with the our communities.

Soldiers of America

It was a shallow morning
as the sun rose over the hills
echoes of screams bellowed across the valleys waking up distraught -
disbelief "America under attack"
Our sorrows and cries spread across the plains
Our freedom at stake
As we fall asleep tonight
Lets remember who stands guard
Protects our freedom
and serves our country
standing upon that wall
standing alert for our safety
as we lay soundly in our beds
For America is not America
Without her people
and her people cannot be Americans
without the Soldiers of America!

By LCpl Katrina M. Sharp
United States Marines

With our deepest condolences to all who have lost their loved ones in this tragedy and in respect to the Men and Women of the Armed Forces. To allow us to sleep safely in our beds. We as Americans will not forget this tragic day nor our Soldiers of America. Salute to the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force for you heroic symbolism..

I am sickened by what has happened, however i am downright outraged by some, so-called americans, that take their anger out on american citizens that own convenience stores and other businesses that we frequent daily. one minute i'm proud to be an American and the next i'm ashamed . arab Americans, pakistani, etc., are now beating-boys for the ignorant.

If We Fall

If we fall today
Please don't close your eyes
When the day ends
Keep your bright eyes on us
If we fall away
Know it is not all in vain
If we close our eyes
Watch us as we fall and go
When the night ends
Watch the valor fade away
Remember us tonight
But keep your eyes on us
Watch us fall away
And never forget our faces
We can never fall From eyes that refuse to close
For if we fall today
We will never fall tomorrow...

The terrorists who are responsible for the attack on our Country have a goal.

However unbelievable it may sound, they wish to destroy us. Destroy us, our Country, our society and all of the things that we believe in. The total destruction of everything that the United States stands for is their goal.

If we take our leaders at their word, they have finally figured this out. They say we will fight a war against ALL terrorist and those that harbor them. I hope this means that, as in a war, we will strike the enemy once he is located, even if he hasn't had the opportunity to launch his attacks yet. That was our mistake prior to September 11th. We didn't face up to it that terrorism had declared war on us. We only RESPONDED with deadly force AFTER we were hit. In retrospect, it seems really stupid.

When President Bush said, "we are at war," I hope he means with All terrorists. Let us not stop with the butcher in Afghanistan. Once he has been dealt with we need to continue on and eradicate all terrorists. Why would we want to wait until they have the time to plan revenge for our actions of self-defense? We can't. If we are going to war against terrorist it must be ALL of them.

One other thing, as we know, the terrorist want to destroy our beliefs. Do not let them. These fatherless scum are NOT Muslims. They may claim it all they want but the fact is, they are trying to hijack the Muslim faith for their own gain just as surely as they hijacked those planes to use as bombs. The innocent people on board those planes are no different from the innocent Muslims who are citizens of the United States. They are one with us all, citizens of the greatest country in the history of man. If we give in to hate and harm our fellow citizens we let the terrorists win. Let's direct our hate and anger where it belongs, against terrorists.

Bill Weber,
Warwick, RI

Our nation will survive to fight another day, and in the midst of carnage, and terror, we will come together as a nation, just to prove to the rest of the world, that we are indeed the strongest of countries. We should feel sorrow, for the families affected by this act, but we should also pull together, as a nation. As the feelings of terror end, I think it's ok to feel angry, but trust in our great nation to strike those responsible for this act of war. God Bless the people who have worked with little sleep, and determination to find the survivors of this act of terrorism. They are indeed heroes, and should be comended for the effort. We will become a stronger nation, and everyone should say a prayer for our fellow citizens.

God Bless the USA

I recently graduated from URI and moved to Atlanta. Being away from family and friends through this incident has been difficult, particularly when I find out how how many people I know that just missed being at the WTC and the Pentagon. But out of this whole experience, the scariest thing to me was talking to my 17-year-old brother. He informed me that he was getting involved by donating money and giving blood but the continued to say he couldn't wait until he was 18 so he could join the war and bomb the hell out of the countries that did this. Is this really the right message we want to be sending? After such a tragic loss, revenge may be desirable but it is no means the answer. It will only result in the loss of many more innocent people both in this country and abroad.

Dawn Winalski

My Dear American Friends,

I send my heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims of this inhumane and heinous terrorist attack.

I totally support the idea of a full investigation into this horrific tragedy but such an investigation must isolate and not go beyond the individuals directly responsible. We must not allow this recent incident to alter our American way of life.

We must determine what mental techniques and manipulation were used to turn those individuals into mindless murderers, individuals that are psychologically indoctrinated to feel nothing about the mass murder of innocent lives. Who was it that provided the pep pills for suicide-bombers and implanted them with the idea of the glory of sacrifice and dying?

This turns my attention not to Osama bin Laden but to his chief aide, Ayman al-Zawahiri, who was a former psychiatrist convicted of terrorism in Egypt and sentenced to death in absentia. It is only too painfully obvious to me that destructive mental practices are being used for political ends and for the creation of fear in American hearts in the aftermath of terrorism. Psychiatrists were the men behind Hitler, behind the "ethnic cleansing" in Serbia, and are now hard at work destroying the soul of America, freedom.

This is a fear that we must unite together to prevent. This fear is not part of our American way of life and we must not allow it to become so. We can prevent this from happening by exposing those directly responsible for this terrorism, those who would use destructive mental practices for political ends.

Sincerely,
Linda Mears

Patriotism...325+ flags, banners or ribbons in just 9 miles of our run today.

My husband and I are training for the Ocean State Marathon in 3 weeks. We did a ten mile run today (the last mile was a repeat of mile one) through parts of Mapleville, Chepachet and Harrisville. We counted every flag, banner or ribbon on cars, houses and fences. In such a heart breaking time, it was uplifting.

Thank you all.

GROUND ZERO
(written September 14, 2001)

The faces of our nation forlorn,
this day chosen for us to mourn.
Our lives will never be the same,
our hearts and souls they tried to maim.
The sleeping giant was not aware,
they didn't think the devil would dare.
Towers have fallen and lives have been crushed,
cities of laughter minimized to a hush.
Terrorism, the ultimate work of Satan,
cannot withstand the strength of this nation.
We must continue our daily lives,
it's the only way we will survive.
The anger in ourselves at a full roar...
the grief much stronger, keeps it in store.
The time to seek justice is near,
grab your families and hold them dear.
We are all looking for retaliation,
but first let's focus on finding lost faces.
God Bless America!

I am very concerned at how the media is reacting to the '911' event. In particular, I have received information that the images of Palestinians cheering the destruction used by CNN was actually shots from the 1991 invasion of Kuwait. I don't know how true this is--there are people who have the same shots in Brazil trying to confirm and protest this issue. I think it is very, very important for the media to not sensationalize the tragedy, as it is a matter a life and death for a lot of by-standers.

Peace,

I hope we will have only impenetrable cockpit doors. They should be strong. They should only open from the inside or have security codes. The stewardesses should carry pepper spray to disable terrorists. The cockpit could hold weaponry since it would be totally secured. The pilots should already be trustworthy because they already hold the lives of the passengers and crew in their hands. Please address the issues of cockpit security!!!! Thank you.
