Screening children

According to the R.I. Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Act of 1991, every child under 6 years of age in the state is required to have a yearly blood test for lead poisoning. Testing may stop at age 3 if past tests have shown that the child is free of lead poisoning, if the child has not moved to a new house, or if the child's house has not undergone renovations.

By law, all Rhode Island-based health insurers must cover such tests. Those without insurance should call RIte Care, at (800) 942-7434.

The state Department of Health will provide comprehensive lead inspections of homes of children whose lead levels are above 20 ug/dl, a level that suggests they are significantly poisoned.

Evidence of lead screening is required for all children seeking enrollment in public or private kindergartens, daycare, preschool or early childhood education programs
