To report a problem in R.I.

If you see someone sanding or scraping a house that you believe was painted with lead-based paints -- and that could be any house built before 1978 -- call the state Department of Environmental Management.

During normal work hours, you can reach painting inspectors by calling the Office of Compliance and Inspection at 222-1360.

During nights, weekends and holidays call the Office of Enforcement at 222-3070 and leave a message. That phone line is staffed 24 hours a day.

Where to call for help in Massachusetts

The Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program offers training materials and an at-home test on how to take the lead out of a house or provides a list of licensed lead inspectors. Call 1-800-532-9571.

Tenants of children under 6 may call their local Lead Poisoning Prevention Program or Board of Health. If those services are not available in your community, call 1-800-532-9571.
