John
Freidah has been a staff photographer
at The Providence Journal since 1995, coming here from The State Journal-Register,
in Springfield, Ill. A graduate in engineering physics from Stevens Institute
of Technology, Freidah was a fiber-optic engineer at McDonnell Douglas Astronautics
before changing careers to focus on social issues. His photographic essays
include a six-month project on a 8-year-old boy born addicted to drugs,
a look at a criminal's effort to break the cycle of recidivism, and a year-long
documentary of a dying man's campaign to legalize physician-assisted suicide.
Freidah was named the Region 1 (New England) Photographer of the Year in
1996 and 1997 by the National Press Photographers Association. In 1999,
he was second runner-up for Photographer of the Year in the national Pictures
of the Year contest.
