A faithful reporter of the passing news since 1829

The Inside Story

This section reflects months of work by a team of reporters, researchers, designers and editors.

The content, just like the daily newspaper from which it's drawn, is a sampler of the important, tragic and humorous events that The Providence Journal newspapers have covered since July 21, 1829.

Most of the content comes right from the pages of the newspaper, which are preserved on microfilm in the Journal's library. The Rhode Island Historical Society also helped with the research.

The highlight of the research was the discovery, among the holdings of the Library of Congress, of the only known surviving copy of the first issue of The Providence Daily Journal. Its four pages are reprinted in this section.

Two texts were especially important: The Providence Journal -- 150 Years, 1981, by former Journal editors Garrett D. Byrnes and Charles H. Spilman; and Half a Century with The Journal, 1904, by Henry R. Davis.
