1995. Journal sets sights on HORIZONS before navigating to projo.com

In April 1995, The Providence Journal took its first tentative steps into the world of online news delivery, testing a service called Rhode Island HORIZONS, with access to the news content of The Journal, as well as archival material and features not available in the newspaper.

The service was publicly announced in The Journal of May 1, 1995, with a story that began: "An electronic newspaper, Rhode Island HORIZONS, is being zapped into homes via phone lines across the state and nearby Massachusetts."

As the World Wide Web became more popular in 1996, HORIZONS' staff of 12 learned Web programming, posting Web sites, including a tourism site and Red Sox fan site.

HORIZONS would die less than two years after its creation, ceasing operations July 31, 1996, though the online staff continued updating the specialty sites.

It would be replaced by projo.com, a Web site that adopted the nickname for The Providence Journal that was popular with college students and wannabe hipsters. With free access to Journal stories as well as updates throughout the day, it officially opened at noon on Oct. 1, 1996.
