About the author
Providence Journal staff writer Michael
Corkery filed his reports on the conflict in Central Asia,
equipped with a satellite
phone, laptop and digital camera.
He was embedded with the 2nd
Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment of the U.S. Army's Third
Infantry Division.
Last year, he traveled to Afghanistan to chronicle
the profound changes that swept the country after the fall of the
Taliban. The resulting series, Life After Dark, may be viewed at:

Since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001,
Corkery has written extensively on the history and future of Afghanistan,
which he studied at Brown University in Providence, R.I.
Corkery, 28, who grew up in Gloucester, Mass.,
started working for The Providence Journal in 1997 as a two-year
intern.
After completing his internship, he worked
as a reporter for The Burlington Free Press, in Vermont. He returned
to The Journal as a staff writer in 2000.
