About the authors
In his 15 years at The Providence Journal, Gerald
M. Carbone has won an American Society of Newspaper Editors Distinguished
Writing Award for non-deadline writing; a John S. Knight Fellowship for
study at Stanford University; and two regional writing awards from the
Associated Press.
He has led writing workshops at the Poynter Institute,
the National Writers' Workshop and several newspapers.
He graduated from the University of New Hampshire
in 1982. Prior to joining The Providence Journal, he worked for newspapers
in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine.

Cathleen F. Crowley joined The Providence
Journal's West Bay bureau in 2002, where she covers Warwick schools, courts
and police-related news. A journalism graduate of Boston University, she
worked at The Eagle-Tribune in Lawrence, Mass., for six years covering
courts and general news.
Crowley was a principal writer on The Eagle-Tribune's
award winning "Building Bridges" series in 2001 and its "Unrealized
Assets" series in 2000. "Building Bridges" won a James
K. Batten Award in Civic Journalism from the Pew Center for Civic Journalism,
and both projects won the Public Service Award from the Society of Professional
Journalists.
