1946 Dodge pickup

1972 Chevrolet Chevelle SS

Shows/events Weekly Cruise Nights

Scott Parkinson of Warwick checked out a lot of Chevrolet Chevelles when he was looking for a hobby car two years ago. He chose this 1972 Super Sport from Attleboro because it was in better shape, at a better price, than the others.

Then he made it even better. He beefed up the engine with a four-barrel Holley 750 carburator and detailed the engine compartment with chrome accessories. The engine was bored and got a new intake system, aluminum heads and a high performance camshaft and now produces 425 horsepower. Parkinson lowered the suspension, installed 17-inch tires on American Racing wheels and added a gauge package and dual exhausts.

The previous owner painted the Chevy in a Dodge truck metallic blue, with silver specks and white racing stripes that are especially effective on the factory racing hood, which features cowl induction.

Some of the items are non-stock, including the aftermarket steering wheel. He replaced the original wheel "because it was too big."

The efforts of Parkinson and his wife, Jean, have earned them several trophies at local shows. He goes to as many cruise nights as he can, and he modifies the Chevy as the mood strikes him. He's always been a GM guy, weaned on the '76 Corvette that his dad let him drive.

And he likes driving the Chevelle because that's what it's all about. "I think I'm all through making modifications for this year," he says. "This summer, I'm just going to drive it."

Engine/transmission: 350-cubic-inch V8; three-speed automatic.

Color: Dodge blue with white racing stripes.

Mileage: 32,000 on restoration.

Plate: JX994.

Can be seen: Oakland Beach, Warwick, on Tuesdays, Denny's in Coventry on Wednesday and Crescent Park, East Providence, on Saturdays.

Condition: Modified restoration.
