Last month I posted a link to sign up for the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts Newsletter. This month they go one better—they've started a weblog. You can sign up for emails which will be sent each time they update the blog. To quote from RISCA's website "An enormous amount of information flows through our door invoving job opportunities for artists, competitions here and throughout the country, interesting things that are happening in the area of arts education, artist housing, health care, practically any topic of interest to the Rhode Island arts community."
"We've enjoyed producing our electronic newsletter (and plan to continue offering that to the public), but there are many times we wished we had a more immediate mechanism for communicating this information. The RISCA Weblog is our attempt to do that." Sign up at http://www.arts.ri.gov/blogs/index.php

Of course, I must first make a plug for projo.com's own, free, no strings attached, Rhode Island artist's directory. We will set up a webpage for you on which you can post up to eight images, comments, show announcements and contact information. You can update as often as you like. You may even appear on Projo's home page some Tuesday as our featured artist. Here's how to get started. Check this space in the future for more sites that offer free web pages for artists.

Absolute arts has been presenting art news, research, art galleries and artists portfolios since 1995. They offer a free portfolio that allows posting of up to 4 images (thumbnails and larger versions), information and a statement. You can update your page as needed. It also lets you post your email in case someone may want to contact you for purchase or more information. (You can, of course, upgrade to a paid portfolio which allows more images and e-commerce.) Absolute arts is a well organized site with many extras and multiple methods for searching for art by artist, style, even size—the free listings come up in the search results along with the paid listings. ArtWanted.com You can upload 5 images per month with 5 keywords each, email link, website link, comments, rating and ability to sell work online (15% commission)
The entry page is a bit overwhelming, but the individual artist pages are well organized with a slideshow option, space for comments, website link and "art watch" which allows viewers to be notified by email each time you upload a new piece.
They also have contests, listings by most recent images and/or comments uploaded and a good search feature. To see a sample page, click here.

If the Home Depot ProBook is next to Ralph Myer's The Artist's Handbook of Materials and Techniques on your studio bookshelf, you may find art materials through The ResourceXchange, a free service provided by the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation. This website creates links between business, non-profits, educational institutions, and government agencies that have a surplus of waste materials and those who have a use for these materials.
